Do all EXi:s have Korgs "ultra-low-aliasing oscillators"?..

I was just reading in the manual, and in the description of some EXi:s it mentions the anti-aliasing oscillators, but in others it doesn't.

Is it a typo?..

All PCM playback oscillators, including those in the HD-1, STR-1, and MOD-7, use the HD-1's sample playback oscillator, with its ultra-low-aliasing bandlimited interpolation.

The virtual analog oscillators in the AL-1, MS-20EX, and PolysixEX have some internal differences, but all employ Korg's anti-aliasing virtual analog technology. Note that this is completely different from sample playback, requiring correspondingly different anti-aliasing techniques.

The STR-1's string modelling isn't an "oscillator" per se. The CX-3's tonewheels are basically special-purpose oscillators, but are not as susceptible to audible aliasing due to the way that the model operates.

The MOD-7's oscillators are quite different, and high amounts of VPM, waveshaping, and/or ring modulation can certainly cause audible aliasing, as they will on most other systems. Some consider this to be part of FM's charm. The MOD-7 also features various tools for reducing aliasing, such as extensive key tracking and filters (both the patchable multimode filters, and the highpass and lowpass filters built into each of the oscillators). 32-bit, floating-point operation also makes it a little quieter than the original 12-bit DX7. Smile

Best regards,

Dan

Hi Dan,

Thanks fo answering and clearing that up! Very Happy

I asked mainly out of curiosity, and not because I found some EXi:s sounding better or worse than others. They all sound great!

When I play the Oasys and run it through a pair of Genelec 8040's, the quality of the audio is simply undescribable. I have never in my life experienced such clarity and presence from a synth.

Funny, I recently did an A-B test with LAC (software version, PowerMac, MOTU 828mkII) and LAC in the Oasys, thinking there wouldn't be much of a difference. Well..

In honor of the pipe (or is it really a pipe?..) in your avatar: the Oasys smoked the software.

Big time.
