Does Korg really have to make a move? When I take a look on the market for workstation flagships I find two products: Kronos and Montage.

Korg did its last bigger move 2011 with the first Kronos, Yamaha followed 2016 with the Montage.

Both sides have been updating their platforms in the last years.
Any reason for bringing out a complete new product line and throwing away Montage or Kronos?

And if they have reasons and currently work on a new 'big bang' (64bit OS with GPU-computing), they won't tell you until the press release on the next NAMM Wink

The context of the discussion is usually what Korg " should do ". Which is always nothing more than wish listing.

Korg and other co's go by sales, or by the #'s. They can tell if sales are floundering or dropping at retail. we cannot see that- but we can see the used market.

In the US alone, there are about 50 used K's on eBay. Mostly from private parties. In addition, craigsList might have a couple depending where.
My local CL has 5 used Kronos' for sale.

In general, this volume will decrease the used price. So a careful buyer, could save $ on a used K. I would make an effort to save +$1000

Exactly. And if they decide to bring something new, it doesn't necessarily be new hardware.
It could be a software update to bring in new features. New effects, new instruments or updates of existing ones (AL-2 for ex.). The wishlist threads contain dozens of improvement ideas that could be implemented in the current platform.

Maybe they come up with a paid hardware upgrade service and replace mainboards with newer ones, who knows...

Can Kronos wake up after decades in a coma?

One thing is for sure.
DAW integration is EXCELLENT, especially for Logic Pro users.
Kronos is not anymore a King.
And when comes to dance music, this FANTOM is a winner in WORKSTATION class. it looks like Kronos will definitely drop in sales.

That's true. Since it seems to be easy to use with many features for live playing available it could attract many Nord Stage users, too.

But imho the nearest workstation to the Fantom is the Montage and I think for that one the Fantom is really bad news.

Worth mentioning. Roland is not playing the ' chase technology ' game.

Kronos has strong dependance on computer tech, as we well know.

So its good to see these alternatives. Roland is touting its seamless integration
with VST's/DAW, and bringing those important sounds back into the Fantom.

The FA also does this, but I would like to understand the limits on this - the integration, FA vs Fantom

Wow. Hooray Roland for getting tha ball rolling.

Also i just saw this from Korg as un updated Korg Kross
https://youtu.be/ezePH-8XiTk

So Korg is making moves.
And why Roland did not wait for NAMM on the new Phantom?
Maybe does not matter if it is a real powerhouse that no one can outshine before January NAMM.

When kronos came out, it was leading the way and Roland followed up with lesser response. Yamaha followed up very late but still a worthy try with Montage.
Roland may be leading the way this time around with the new Phantom.
And hopefully it is enough to force Korg to redo the Kronos or replace it with a new series.

Don’t be surprised people, if i get the new Phantom.
I still have to watch all the videos about its new release.
To see what it brings to the show.

Wow...

And that on the same day the Fantom comes out, what a coincidence Laughing

But to be serious: Is that a decent sounding reverb on the Kross? When does the Kronos get it?

The Fantom demo was a full 29 minutes and that is impressive for the first peak.
Shows that there is a lot in there.

Seems Roland made the leap to touch screen finally, and then more the Montage style system in there.

I am not saying it is like the Montage, but that it styles the touchscreen based system more to Montage workflow than Kronos workflow.

Seems Roland packed it with extra features that give a strong competition for Montage to face.

I like it but no mention of audio sequencer.
The sampler system and the 16 pads work to give the same as 16 tracks of audio when all 16 pads are assigned with audio clips.
And nearly 2GB dedicated to the Sampling alone, is very impressive.
I am still not sure how close the 16 track sampler bank performs to a 16 track audio recording suite like Kronos has. Maybe FA owners will know.
I will have to look up the polyphony on the new Fantom.

No word on the polyphony. Not even on the spec sheet of Roland website.
They just say “new synth engine with loads of polyphony”.

Hmmm. Are they nervous about the polyphony and unable to speak about it?
