In the Triton Sequencer you can't make realtime changes to the note data whilst the sequencer is playing, like you can with more traditional analogue step sequencers or computer based sequencers. I like working in this interactive way tweaking the pitch/velocity/duration of the notes in a groove as it plays, particularly for bass lines.

Fortunately you can acheive the same effect using the Arpeggio editor. Hurrah !

Firstly select your favourite bass proggy in Program mode, and on the Arpeggio tab select a blank Arpeggio pattern such as U231. Turn Latch on, and set Octave to One. Choose 16th note resolution for this example. Turn the Arpeggio on, using the button at the right hand end of the Triton.

Now switch to Global mode, and go to P6: User Arpeggio. Select the Pattern Edit tab and clear the pattern if necessary by choosing "Initialize Steps" from the menu. On the right side of screen set the length to 16.

Now we need to add some data in there to trigger the notes. So select the field called "Step No" and set it to 01. Now press button 0, and you will see a blob appear on the grid. Now increment the value in "Step No" to 02 and press button 0 again. Repeat until all 16 steps are filled. This gives you 1 bar of 16th notes.

If you hit a key you will hear that note repeated over and over in the same way. Not very groovy.

Hopefully if you turned Latch On earlier the arp will just keep running.

Now the fun starts. Use the Step No field to select different steps in the groove and experiment with changing the velocity, gate value, and pitch offset at each step, or even toggling steps on/off (by pressing button 0) and you will hear your changes to the pattern in real time as the arp is still playing. Try very simple things like increasing the velocity of notes 3, 7, 11, 15 (offbeat notes) and increasing the gate time of notes 1, 5, 9, 13 (note on the beat).

Now you can trigger that pattern in record mode in the Sequencer and use that bass line as the basis for a track. When setting up the Arpeggio in Sequencer mode, don't forget to set the Gate and Velocity fields to 'Step' so it uses the values you programmed.

Isn't that a lot more fun, than messing around in Event Edit Wink

For more information about editting Arpeggio patterns see page 100 onwards of the Triton Classic's Basic Guide.

Aha ! Of course, this same technique can be used for creating drum patterns too, in a much more "tweak" friendly way. Full details on page 103 of the basic guide.

Sounds great.

You should write a song around that bit of programming you just done. It's a real kicking beat.  Cool
