I remember back in 2005, when the OASYS came out.
I wanted that synth so bad, but at that time i had my YAMAHA MOTIF 6 and my KORG KARMA for only about three years,
and i had alot of programming and time in those synths.
The OASYS was so expensive, and it wouldnt have
worked out financially to get OASYS.
Now i have KRONOS.
To me personally, i like KRONOS better than OASYS.
Only paid $2700 for a brand new KRONOS X 61 key, (as i prefer synth action.)
Still, even though i view KORG KRONOS, and YAMAHAS MOTIFs as among the best digital synths.
I also still see KORG OASYS that way too.
It is still super awesome!

It was and still is great! I remember seeing that 8k price tag and saying, "No way!" So, I did the next best thing, I bought the Triton Extreme, the MOSS EXB card. Korg was running a special offer, the Extreme came with the Legacy software - Wavestation and MS20. The setup was like a mini-OASYS. Mind you, I also had the Triton Classic, SY99, Virus C and other synths, so I was set.

I kept going to Musician's Friend to play the OASYS. My lust for it became insatiable. At the time, it only had HD-1, AL-1, CX-3 and Wavesequencing. MOD-7 and the other add ons came later. Still, it was so impressive. It had all those Insert and Master effects, which was more than double of just about anything else out, in 2005.

I wasn't getting on with the Legacy software. What I really wanted was the OASYS uber-wavestation that could play an infinite palette of samples. The thing had 4 line inputs and 10 line outputs, plus digital options. It really matched that big mixer interface. I love my Kronos, but it doesn't have all those ins and outs.

The hardest part? Figuring out how to pay for it. I promised my wife, that I would sell a bunch of synths, so I pulled out my credit card, called Sweetwater and ordered the OASYS 76, for $8,000. I was stoked and scared, at the same time! I sold the Tritons, Virus C, Moss, a Fantom, and I hated to see them go, but the OASYS could handle so much on its own; a true desert island workstation/synth.

It sits right under my Kronos and they make a great pair. It doesn't crash without a UPS. The OASYS is so rock solid and so well built, it is just amazing. You've probably heard the stories about how heavy it is. It can really take some punishment....

Despite this picture, I really do love it!

The Oasys is still my to go synth the key action is what i like on the 76 despite having a Kronos, the Kronos despite having all them sound engines it still falls in it's own category i honestly do not need all the sounds it has but i like the cpu processor it is faster and reads more formats including Oasys PCG files so it still great.

I loved my Oasys for many years,I owned it from 2007 up until 18 months ago,it was a beast of a machine during its time and still is for many, sad to see it go it was a hard decision to make but haven't really looked back since purchasing a Kronos 2-61,The Oasys was rock solid it never crashed and it was still using the original hard drive from factory

I was pissed for a while at Korg after dropping it and then releasing the Kronos in a more affordable package and giving it more life in the Kronos functions,so I was holding off purchasing one in angst, then came along the issues that some were having with the first generation K so it made my mind up to not purchase for a long time, then they released the Mk2 Kronos and I couldn't hold off any longer.

The Decision to replace it with a Newer Kronos 2 was mainly because I was bothered about replacement parts for the Oasys should anything go wrong,I had looked at simply getting a secondhand Kronos V1 for gigging and keep the Oasys for Studio work,or purchasing a seconhand Oasys for spares but I thought that was simply just a waste of money in the long run,and I'd have a second unit lying round in wait for no real benefit and given the Kronos spares will be more readily available should anything go down it was a no brainer for me,I do miss certain elements of the Oasys like the physical pads and the Led bar graph sliders but other than that I essentially have the guts and more with the newer Kronos.

Although I have had duplicate synths in the past(Tritons)I didn't see the point in Keeping both an Oasys and Kronos,it was either keep them both and sell the Triton Extreme or buy a Kronos and keep the Extreme, for me the Extreme was giving me more of a separate sound palette than 2 synths of the same type.

One of the bug bears I hated about the Oasys had been dealt with by Korg making a 61 key version in Kronos, something I guess Korg were unable to do with the Oasys because of its footprint of the panel which wouldn't have fitted into a 61 Size casing,I gigged relentless with the Oasys and it was rock solid but with a decent flight case and the size of the damn thing(even the 76 note)was a hernia waiting to happen.

Plus the value of the Oasys dropped quicker than a lead balloon from what I originally paid which was just over the £5k Mark,I'd never bought it as an investment more as what Korg had promised with it,lessons were learnt and it will be the last time i spent such a huge chunk on a singular Instrument although it was kind of niche at the time.

I'd had my moneys worth out of it and it was time to move on with it I just don't ever see it being a specialist collectors item with the Kronos superseding it,whether it increases in value again in a few years time given the minimal amount of units made who knows I have no regrets in letting it go.

I like the OASYS pic.
Though it made me want to cringe a little. Laughing

OASYS: Open Architecture SYnthesis Studio
KRONOS: Korg Redesigns OASYS as a Non-Open System

Although I've heard that the "openness" of the OASYS architecture didn't turn out as originally anticipated....

I was very pleased with what Korg did from 2005 - 2009. Remember, there were just 3 engines on it to start. We got 4 more, a new EXs, hundreds of new programs, and several OS updates. MOD-7 could have been its own uber-synth, and that was just one update!

Some people who bought it in 08 and 09 expected the updates to continue indefinitely, so they felt owed. But, Korg took this thing further than I ever expected. I look at the manufacturers that released hardware that would supposedly conquer obsolescence - Peavey DPM synths, Roland VariOS, etc. - and few (outside of Access) have approached the OASYS' amount of updates.

I was awfully glad to have the OASYS, when my Kronos went into the shop for a few months. With the EXi Xpansion set, it has the same combis as the Kronos/Kronos X factory set. With the exception of "The Era of Kronos" combi, the OASYS makes for a good backup. For big orchestral arrangements, you can pair them up. You don't even need a mixer, just run OASYS S/P DIF into Kronos.

I wish my Kronos had the big OASYS touchscreen...
