For example the song Mama by Genesis. Tons ran his Quadra through a Lynn drum so he could hold down a chord and would have that stabbing synth in the background.
What note values are you looking for? Quarter, either, sixteenth notes? You would want to use a program that has no attack, a very short decay, no sustain and no release- like a pizzicato string. An example of what you are trying to achieve would help. _________________ "To me the synthesizer was always a source of new sounds that musicians could use to expand the range of possibilities for making music."

Try Karma Gates
or a Step Sequencer / squareLFO
it depends on the engine what you will use, for synths I would modulate the volume. if you need smoother attack use a sine wave and adjust the phase and waveform to give whatever flavor you want) _________________ DX7-MOD-7 Patches | Korg Related Content

there are indeed lots of possibilities:
- KARMA (for instance GE0000 with the pattern template at value 127 or the KARMA GE with the 16th description in the name)
- AMS LFO's on the Volume assignment
- Wave sequences with the specific pattern
- Step sequencers (with the Square LFO trick if you want to reset the ADSR at each loop)
- RPPR patterns
- Audio loop (combined with the KARMA 1 bar note trick so that you can shut it on and of whenever you like and always in sync)
- Square LFO in the program itself (so it's programmed that way)
- Side chaining with the pattern programmed in the kick drum that you route in-audible to a compressor to get the ducking effect on your pattern
- and so on
there are lot of different approaches, but they will all work, so it's a matter of preference which one you like and know how to do.
Here's a tutorial that explains how to create your own gate pattern
