|
|
I just thought I would ask the group how many and what type of keyboards you use for live performances?
Back in the 80’s I had a total of four. I had a Helpinstill Roadmaster, Roland VK1, Prophet 5 and a Pro 1. Now I only use the Kronos x73. Currently, I’m in a mostly 80’s and 90’s cover band and find with the ability to create split keyboard combinations I don’t need an additional board. |

Most of the time I only bring my Kronos. I have one combo where I play bass on my Voyager and when I'm subbing sometimes I bring my old Hammond XB1 clonewheel with Ventilator just so I'll have something that's always organ. |

Quick convention gig - Kronos 61.
Off island gig - 88 rented (S90ES etc) + Korg Kross.
Jazz Gig - PX-5S or Kronos + VL1
Fusion Gig - PX-5S/Kronos + JP8000 and or VL1.
Depending on how I feel - substitute VL1 or JP8000 for Sequential Pro One.
Next gig in Japan - will try for CP1 and Montage. Might as well. _________________ Korg Kronos, CASIO PX-5S, Yamaha VL1, author of unrealBook for iPad. |

I use a Kronos 2 88 and Nord Electro 5D73 key. Sometimes is just use the Kronos because of the splits and layers. But i feel comfortable with both. _________________ K2 Kronos 88, Mojo 61, Korg CX3, Roland FANTOM 7 |

Full Concert gig: Kronos2 61, Casio PX-5S
Weekly church praise band: Kronos 73 and PX
Gig where space is an issue: Kronos 73
Shorter Gig (a few songs) or venue where quick set up tear down is needed: Either the PX or the 61. (Depending on the songs I'm doing)
Depending on venue, I either use my Bose L1 Model II, or two L1 Compacts for stereo or just one Compact.
The Model II is amazing. I do an outdoor gig on the 4th of July and the sound carries 3 blocks away, yet it's not too loud to have set up right behind me.
Started in 1986 with a Yamaha FM piano (PF80?)
1988 - Ensoniq Digital Piano and EPS. Over the next few years, added HR16 Drum machine and various piano modules, including Korg P1 and Emu Proformance 1+
Early 90's, Korg 01/W pro
Circa 2000, Yamaha S80 and various Mac notebooks
2008, M3-73
2011 - the age of Kronos begins _________________ Kronos 2 88, Kronos Classic 73, PX-5S, Kronos 2 61, Roli Seaboard Rise 49 |

These days I could probably get by just fine with my Kronos, but it's fun for me to play with extra toys. This is my current live setup for the main band I'm in:
Kronos88
Prophet 12
Moog Sub37
Roland Integra7
iPad (running a few synth apps including Geoshred)
And I recently received my DSI OB6 that I'd pre-ordered, so I've also taken that out a couple times for the hell of it.
One-off things vary - sometimes it's just the Kronos, sometimes, it's a Kurz PC361 _________________ ::: Korg Kronos 88 ::: Alesis Fusion 8HD ::: Kurzweil PC361 ::: Roland V-Synth ::: DSI Prophet 12 ::: DSI OB-6 ::: Korg Prophecy ::: Moog Micromoog ::: Yamaha CP-30 ::: Alesis Andromeda ::: Moog Sub37 ::: Sequential Prophet 600 ::: Korg MS2000BR ::: GSI Burn :::

Everything is my K88 v2.
My backup is a K73 v1. (All the mirrored expansions and PCG/Sample loads for exact backup)
I step through the sounds on the main board, the backup board is controlled by the main board so when I step through setlist mode, the second board is following along, but the volume is at 0. If the main board fails, I jump to the second board and approximate the volume, FOH knows that they're 100% identical so they're monitored/mixed the same way. I just approximate the volume in case of a failure but that's never happened yet. _________________ Korg Kronos 88 2, Korg Kronos 73, Kurzweil K2600S

Used to carry Alesis 7.1, Korg Karma, Alesis Ion, and Yamaha MM6 and supplement with a couple of Alesis S4 modules. I got the Kronos to rid myself of the setup time and ease of hauling. Used the K61 only a few times alone until it rebooted itself during a gig 3 times. Started carrying the Karma again as well for backup. Have been trying out different boards to replace the Karma. Have it down to a Roland Fa06 or the Krome. _________________ Korg Kronos 61 Korg Karma Korg Trinity+ DSI Rev 2 16 Casio MZ-X500 61-KEY Roland SH201 Roland FA-06 Ensoniq ESQ1 Alesis 7.1 Alesis Ion Alesis S4 and S4+ Emu B3 mod Yamaha MM6 |

During the last 20+ years I have used a lot of setups:
1. Kawai K4 (wish I could afford a Korg M1 at that time, and what mistake was the Kawai K4).
2. Korg X5 (most light equipment I ever had).
3. Korg N264 + X5 (but mainly used sounds from the N264).
4. Korg Triton Extreme + Korg N264 (but mainly used sounds from the Extreme).
5. Korg Triton Extreme or N264 + Korg M50 (sounds only from M50).
6. Korg Triton Extreme + Korg Kronos (sounds only from Kronos)
7. Korg Kronos + StudioLogic Acuna 88 (sounds only from Kronos).
Overall:
- I always have used 2 keyboards, except in the beginning (lack of money)
- Since the M50 sounds come only from one synth, much easier programming and only one keyboard needed to drag from/to rehearsal room _________________

Two keyboards and foot pedals:
1) Kronos 61
2) Lightweight 61 key MIDI controller powered by Kronos USB
3) FCB1010 MIDI pedals (a la Taurus or to trigger Kronos pads)
I'm full-time bassist, part time keyboardist for my bands, so I like quick and easy set up with max functionality. Got my eye on a lightweight 88 key MIDI controller within the next couple months, so that will replace the 61 key MIDI controller. |

Kronos 61 and an A70 controller. The less space I take up and the less gear I have to schlep, the better - especially since for most gigs I'm also bringing guitar and sax along with the additional gear/stands/etc that go along with that. If I have to bring my own PA as well (which is very rare), then it's just too much. Less is More. _________________
