Does anyone know if Kronos has a factory combi for the intro in Bad Love?

It sounds like a DX7 patch to me. I would start with one of Kronos' "FM" electric piano sounds... One good candidate is called something like FM Spark E Piano. I would tweak it to try to get an attack similar to what you hear on that record, but just playing the chords on that stock patch is probably good enough... assuming its a cover-band kind of situation.

You might shop around for some DX7 libraries for Kronos if you want to find something closer in an out-of-the-box patch. In my opinion, no one is going to pay that much attention to the intro anyway.

I’ll go to work on that and let you know if I find something close. You’re probably right, most people really won’t care about the intro. It is for a cover, I just try to get things right. Thanks.

The sound seems very familiar, possibly from the Korg M1, or the Wavestation. Not from the factory presets, but rather the expansion cards. There's a Program called "Wind Pad 2" in the Korg M1 MSC01/MPC01 "Variety" expansion card that sounds pretty close - it might just need de-brightening a little with some EQ. If you have the Korg Legacy Collection, it should be possible to find it there, on CARD3, Program #72. There are others in the KLC e.g. CARD 16, Program 09 "Pat Pad".

You’re right it does sound familiar. It could have been from a Yamy DX7, it’s from that era. I don’t have excess to ‘variety’ card library darn it. I’ll keep looking, I’ll find something that will work. Thanks

I’m sure you’re aware that there are a ton of sites out there with DX7 patches available… should be able to find the right one to port over.

Pad Hissing Pad is in the neighborhood.

I'd get rid of all the delays first in IFX and Master FX.

In the intro, a quiet stacked fifth is held up a couple octaves.
If you're gonna play that, I'd tweak the upper like this:
- go to Amp1 Mod and Amp2 Mod
- change Center-High to -44
- see next post if you want to Hold this without the sustain pedal

There's a chiff-like element in the sound.
You can emphasize that by raising res and lowering cutoff (both filters).

Hopefully that's close enough for you.

Here's a feature I never realized was there: HOLD just a range of notes.

Previously I though HOLD was only assignable to a timbre.
But the 3rd row I never really noticed until now:

For Bad Love, the stacked fifth is D6 and the A above it.
- go to the Program Basic tab, Key Zone section
- touch the Bottom box on the 3rd row of the HOLD section
- press and hold Enter, then play the D6 note
- enable HOLD

Presto, any notes above D6 will now sustain, without the damper pedal.

For live performance, I'd make sure the Program Basic page shows.
That way you can click off HOLD immediately.

If you're going to use this in a combi, you still have HOLD as an option.
On the Tone Adjust page, upper right, select the Timbre for Hissing Pad.
Find an empty button (Off).
Touch the dropdown, and assign it to [Osc 1 & 2] Hold.

After all these years, still discovering things in the Kronos...

That's a great idea, had not thought about that.

I built a Combi using your idea by editing "Pad Hissing" included in the Combi is..UC 20 FM Cho and UC 38 Breathy EP Pad. Sounds pretty close to what I need. Thanks guys for your ideas.

On the live video, on YouTube, it’s played on an M1 but I think it’s probably it’s layered with a D50 providing the “chuff”

I think you’re exactly right about it being a D50. I found another YouTube video and sounds dead on.

So here’s a cover I found done on Kronos. Shame the Kronos screen is unreadable…

There’s mention in the comments that the D50 sound is “Ok Chorale”

I used to go to such great lengths to accurately reproduce a sound that lasts for about 3 seconds, and that 99.9% of audiences couldn't care less about.

I've spent hours working on some cool intro part. Get to rehearsal to show off my hard work to the band, only to have them say "Let's just skip the intro. Nobody cares about that anyway."

Here's a link to a demo of the OK Chorale Roland D-50 preset:

https://www.synthmania.com/Roland%20D-50/Audio/Factory%20preset%20demos/77%20O%20K%20Chorale.mp3

Sounds pretty similar to the wanted sound. The attack is slower on the sound used in Bad Love.
