I made a quick video comparing the startup times for 2 Roland Workstations and 2 Korg Workstations.

Love my Kronos... don't love the startup time:

Hi Mark, home studio musician here.

Yes, Kronos takes 2 and 1/2 mins to start up. But we are loading huge samples, many are custom.. Its going to take that long no matter the platform

And what does one do with that precious time ? Pet my cat, make coffee, check email. Its not a major adaptation for me.

If bootup time is a major concern, what price the Kross?

Around eight seconds, I think?

The ONLY time that I can see bootup time being an issue is on stage if the power goes out. Even then, buying a battery backup can help with that (although I understand why many people may NOT be able to justify the cost of buying a UPS just to keep their synths from failing during a live performance). In the studio, most of us should have a UPS anyway, must to be able to stop a recording, saving our data and doing a controlled shutdown of our gear.

Yep, the Kross has a LOW boot up time, but it is not loading in resources like the Kronos is. My Kross units fire right up, as do my Ensoniq VFX-SD synths. The one that takes the longest in my studio is my PA700. While it is booting up, I turn on my speakers, load the DAW (if I am using one that session), turin on the Tascam DP32SD (which also takes about the same time as the PA700), turn on my M50, turn on my monitors, etc... by the time I am done with that, the PA700 is ready to go Smile

You get a synth with the resources like the Kronos, you have to expect that it might take a bit to boot up and get everything loaded in. Even the fastest PC takes a bit to load and after that, you need to start up any programs that you are going to use for that session.

I do not see a problem with this at all, except for what I listed in my first paragraph (and that is fixable too).

Grace,
Harry

...and you don't need an expensive UPS onstage; I used a cheap CyberPower 350VA unit back in the old days (!) when we used to play live gigs...the UPS only has to keep the Kronos running on a power glitch, or when the "chick singer" accidentally throws the switch on a power block or pushes your music stand into the Kronos power switch...if power is out for more than a minute or so, you've got more serious problems anyway...
