Hi all!

Does anyone have pictures of the Trinity encoder assembly?

My encoder is skipping. I want to see if I can use the encoder I salvaged from an old i3. The i3 encoder does not have snap mounts, but the 'Trinity online' photos show snap mounts on the encoder.

I am just trying to pre-plan a repair.

Heck, does anyone have take apart disassembly photos of their a Trinity?

Thank you!

Although not a direct answer to the posting, here is a link to a video of a Trinity teardown, showing the removal of the bottom cover, and lifting of the mainboard (for battery replacement). The mainboard will need to come out to reveal the encoder subassembly, so only one more step to get the encoder assembly out, which just involves four screws. The video is best viewed at reduced speed!

Also, images of the encoder assembly:

The ESX1 also uses the same encoder as the Trinity, so may be another source of spares.

Or search eBay for Alps-Electric-24-Pulse-Incremental-Mechanical-Rotary-Encoder-with-a-6-mm-Flat-Sh

or search for part number: EC16B242041SA

The encoder for the i3 is part EC16B25D, so is different.

Thank you, VoIP!

Assuming the 3 pin connector is 10mm (as on the i3),

It looks like the encoder has a 16mm body, 10mm pin spacing, 16mm half moon shaft height, snap in configuration 24 pulse per revolution, 24 detente.

Mouser has the Bourns equivalent:

PEC16-4215F-S0024 with switch and 15mm shaft
PEC16-4220F-N0024 no switch and 20mm shaft

I will order them and keep everyone posted.

The I3 encoder has similar dimensions but a different configuration - the pins are like a volume pot, the circuit board is parallel to the shaft, and the shaft is knurled.

Thank you!

The encoder has been replaced and is working great!

The encoder is easy to get to. You have to remove the HDR/SCSI and the Solo TRI boards. The encoder mounting screws can be accessed without removing the keyboard.

I noticed that a solder pad for one of the encoder pins was cracked. I could have re-soldered the pad but I chose to replace the encoder.

The plastic encoder knob rests against the top frame of the Trinity. I used a Dremel to trim the 20mm shaft down to 16mm so the knob would spin.

I also re-soldered the audio jacks and the sustain jack. And I replaced the floppy drive and upgraded to OS 2.41. Oh I installed the PBS TRI and the ram chips too...Then I loaded my PCG file from a 5 year old floppy (2015 July 7)...and added TFD1s Mega Pianos....

I saved Another Trinity Plus 61 from the salvage pile. It Looks, sounds and plays great! The action is good and the piano/ep/clav/stg/brass/organ/solo sounds are full and present. I can fit the Trinity and my Nord 2x in a Gator Wheeled case for gigs when social distance restrictions are lifted.

Thank you!
