There is a place i found where they sell parts for our Kronos. The motherboard is expensive but if you really want to fix your K it's worth buying it.

Upgrading the Kronos' CPU seems to lead to improvements in e.g. polyphony. Might be worth considering if the Mobo is dead.

the ' voice stealing ' or ' voice borrowing ' has never bothered me.
More importantly, what other CPU's can we utilize if we need to ? _________________ Kronos 88. MODX8

It's still pretty easy to come up with a replacement m'board (either the original Intel D510MO or the newer D525MW) on Amazon or eBay for less than $100, sometimes a lot less...and, although I've never done it, these m'boards can supposedly be installed in the KRONOS without modification (a few mods are required to use the D525MW in the original KRONOS; Korg has documented this)...these m'boards will probably be available for some time (at increasing prices) so it's probably good to get a spare now...
Now as for that new fast m'board with the increased performance described above: it's a lot more expensive ($500+); you'd need to use hacked software; there are still a few problems with it (?); you REALLY need to know what you're doing computer-wise, know LINUX, etc...I don't think it's a realistic option at this point...

Wait, so if I get a Intel D510MO nothing needs to be done? Plug and play? _________________ Korg Kronos, CASIO PX-5S, Yamaha VL1, author of unrealBook for iPad. |

That's my understanding, although I haven't actually installed one...Korg did confirm to me that the standard Intel BIOS is used, so it ought to be P&P...and again, the D510MO is used in the original KRONOS, the D525MW in the later versions...

Thank you. Will keep my eye out on a good deal.
You never know with those vents out of the sliders and the motherboard below. _________________ Korg Kronos, CASIO PX-5S, Yamaha VL1, author of unrealBook for iPad. |

I agree on the expensive hack.
and I confirmed there is no problem finding the current m board for $125.
The original m board is more elusive and expensive.
I believe what we sometimes read here is that the Service Center does not carry the part and they state the standard ' takes 4-8 weeks ' blah blah.
So this is their process , not a result of any current shortage. I see no reason to panic for the time being. _________________ Kronos 88. MODX8

Agree with GregC on the voice stealing. The Kronos handles this remarkably well, in most cases, though there have been a few occasions where voice stealing sounded a bit harsh and unnatural.
Yes, the hack is expensive, and not for the faint hearted, but it might interest the "film scorers" amongst the Kronos users. Getting a same as original replacement is clearly the most straightforward solution, and currently less than 50 bucks, used, on fleabay.

Assuming that's what's in your Kronos now, yes. When my D510MO in the original Kronos went bad, I bought another from ebay, swapped them and that was it. I would recommend when you do it to put in a brand new CMOS battery though. The one on my replacement already needs replacing.

So I've just bought a D510 and D525 - just in case. Before I put them in (hopefully long-term) storage, I suppose I should remove the coin-battery? |
