How could I create the famous Vox Humana patch using AL-1 - I know some of you have done it?

I have been able to make a pretty decent version on my Juno-G and it wasn't that hard (a couple of nice saw waves, a low pass and high pass filter (acting independently on the oscillators) and some LFO for motion and then on one version some phaser). - Just needed 2 oscillators.

I have been trying to do the same thing on AL-1 and not had much success - it sounds too bright even with a 24dB low pass filter and suboscillators. In order to at least get the oscillator ranges what I wanted I had to use two AL-1s in the patch because they need to be filtered differently. That seemed to help a bit - but it still doesn't sound right.

Does any one have any suggestions?

Interesting tutorial, but why he uses two LFOs baffles me. The Polymoog only has one mod LFO for the oscillator bank, so he's making a slightly richer version of Vox Humana that's not really accurate.

I think you're know about pollymoog is completely wrong. I would like to hear your version. One LFO ist not enough to create this sound. Kronik's version is very close.

Here can you read the same.

You got me thinking there... Just checked the Polymoog schematics, there are three modulation LFO's - looks like one for each top octave generator and one for Osc 2 PWM.

BUT... it looks like they're part of the preset voices, i.e. no control from the front panel.

Fascinating reading, but that's the Geek in me Wink

@RKfan... PM sent. I wouldn't worry too much about the intricacies of the tone, as it tends to get lost in the mix, it's the character of the sound that counts.

Well, I forgot how strange the Polymoog is. Razz There is in fact another LFO, but the two LFOs are allocated separately to the Saw Ranks and Pulse Ranks, and for the Pulse Ranks either for vibrato or pulse width modulation. And if I recall rightly, there are a total of five LFOs: one for the saw rank vibrato, one for pulse rank vibrato, two for pulse width modulation on separate halves of the keyboard, and interestingly, pulse width could be set separately for both halves of the keyboard as well. The fifth LFO was available for the filter, and included sample and hold.

@spinatze

I had a quick listen to your patch this morning and finally worked out part of where I am going wrong. I hadn't found the tab where you can add LFO to oscillator pitch (need to wear my glasses). I guess its just a case of getting used to the Korg way of doing things sometimes (for example on the Juno-G you go to LFO and then define how much is going to affect pitch, amp etc - ont the Kronos its kind of the other way around - it still confuses me a little).

I'll have a bit more of a play with your version this evening (horribly work got in the way) - but liked what I heard so far.

The Keyboard mag article is really good too - so thanks for that - I think this is what I used when I build the patch on my Juno. I had another go on the kronos last night using the article yesterday and made a bit more progress - but spinatze's patch is still better than mine.

I have the manual, but aren't exactly engrossed over it. Peek at it every few years and for YouTube demos of one for instance. Not exactly my favorite vintage poly, no, but it is better than an ARP Omni.

Yup you can create/find these buttons just by clicking on the "Link & share this patch" on the bottom of each patch page Smile, they come in different colors as well! Wink

Hey now! This is synthguy, here. I remember... uhm... stuff. Razz

Anyway, if you have access to an actual Polymoog synthesizer, I have to give you a salute. When Gary Numan appeared with Nine Inch Nails, he only had a Polymoog Keyboard on hand.

I had to go back and watch some of those Polymoog YouTubes, and I can't help but feel nostalgic for those old monsters. I could have had one of those for almost nothing at one time as a studio was basically handing it out. But at the time I had no money... oh, the sad days of being an unemployed student.

I'm probably dreaming, but I hope KORG is nice to us Kronos owners and gives us some of those filter models from the King KORG. Then again, that would steal away some of The King's sex appeal, and it's not like we don't have lots of goodies in the Kronos already. Plus I want to play with that tube.
