I just got mine yesterday and unfortunately have to hit the road (no I can't leave you my house keys while I'm gone). I've logged over 12 hours playing it (sacrificing much sleep) and have to say that it sounds amazing!
I thought for certain the MS-20EX was going to be my fave engine but I've been poking around more in the AL-1. I'm loving the "morphing" filter capabilities (AL-1's multi filter) and made a nice template patch with the vector joystick setup for cutoff on one axis and filter balance on the other. I've always wanted to have one control for multiple filters and finally have it with this board.
The grand pianos are absolutely astonishing. The first thing I did was play with the key release and damper levels and it really does sound exactly like a true piano. I like that the perspective can be changed from player to audience for recording.
I really do dig the MS-20EX and PolysixEX and have lost countless hours to just inane patching in the MS-20's patch panel screen! Like Tom Ellard from Severed Heads once said, "there something alive in there!"
The last thing I'll say is that I was completely overwhelmed by the content. There are a number of expansion banks that come on the hard drive that you can load manually (tons of ethnic/world drums, orchestral samples, etc...) and some "extras" on the DVDs that come with it. Don't fool yourself into thinking you'll just settle down with one engine for a while when you open the box; you'll definitely want to give everything a listen (oh, except for the GM voices )
Cheers... _________________ - cynkh -

Sounds like you are having fun. There are so many new things to discover

I hope there are some Asian instrument sounds in it.
Have fun when you get back.

I just realized those extra banks were there on disk (they are listed at the end of the VNL PDF too). I couldn't find a decent flute sound to save my life last night and there are a lot to choose from in the extra banks...D'OH! _________________ Korg Kronos 61 (2); Kurzweil PC4; Casio Privia PX-350m; Macbook Pro |

For the sake of space user bank space, you might want to find your favorites from the 2 brass&woodwinds PCG's and replace the original ROM sounds with them. like take the cool flute sound you found last night and overwrite some less desireable flute sound with it. the EXs3 is a pretty awesome expansion, it's a shame they didn't make a place for those 2 banks in the factory presets, but I could see myself forgetting about loading those PCGs when I'm trying to sequence. The french horn and flute samples are by far the best of that whole collection, and way better than the ROM samples.

If you open the VNL manual, you will find it last on the list.
There is quite a bit to mention.. much less post. _________________ Lou |

There are extra .PCG files on the SSD and DVD, but I'm not entirely sure whether they reference samples that are already loaded or not. I'm also not clear what's in the preload.pcg file. Maybe Rich can set us straight. I tried auditioning some .PCG files and they worked (i.e., the brass and woodwinds). Then I tried a vintage keyboards bank and most of them made no sound so I'm guessing I don't have that loaded by default. _________________ Korg Kronos 61 (2); Kurzweil PC4; Casio Privia PX-350m; Macbook Pro |
