|

If you are getting a Pro, be aware that the cables coming out of the 24 inch monitor is very short, a little over 3 feet... there are no extension cables for it and no other solution yet.
Also there are more than a few reports of dust behind the glass and slight unpredictable color shifting. It's a gamble but those for whom it works, they love the clarity and color accuracy. I will keep my 23 inch Cinema display. I like the matte finish screen and 3 feet is too short.
On the Pro, if you use the new wireless mouse you're good. If you're using a USB mouse, plug it into the computer keyboard and turn off Bluetooth in the Mouse/Keyboard and Bluetooth system preferences. Otherwise Bluetooth wants to rule.
Running Disk Utility produces permission problems that will not go away. Running Disk Utility from the Install disk does not get rid of them. This is a known issue and has to do with certain apps such as Front Row and few others. As far as I can tell only a software update from Apple will fix it. Maybe this is just a Leopard issue. I have been running Tiger until now.
Disk Warrior will come out with an update for the new Pro as soon as Apple gives them what they need.
Otherwise, it's all good. No I didn't waste any time. I've been waiting for this moment for 5 years. Still setting things up so nothing more to report yet.

There's a lot to be said about stability and not fixing something if it isn't broken. I loved my G5 but the processor wasn't sufficient for what I want to do. It was time for an Intel anyway. You can go to a Mac at any time. But once you go Mac you'll never go back. Apple can be a little goofy sometimes but I wouldn't change for anything.
Another note: The Pro only has Firewire 800 ports on it. My MOTU 896 uses 400 cables. I am getting a 400-to-800 adapter. MOTU says this should all work fine. Hope so. Anyway, after Google research, this adapter was highly recommended. Comes from Cal. and cost about $24 with 2 day air.

Update: The 400-to-800 adapter works. MIDI and audio drivers for Leopard work. The computer works like a charm and is very fast. Compared to the G5 it's flying. Omnisphere and Stylus multis are using about 1/8 cpu compared to the G5 which was red lining with one patch in most cases. No problems on any front. End of report! |
