Hi guys.
Seems the rumours floating around the net are that GEM have closed up.

Crying shame to see any keyboard manufacture going under.

Regards.

yes there were some rumors about this a few month ago, they were searching for some fundings but it seems that they didn't manage to find a way out. It is a real pity that a good italian factory had to close.

I always thought GEM were renamed casio's with a higher price tag. They do look the same.

Can't say I ever thought of GEM as a CASIO.
GEM produced some really great pro end gear over the years. I always wanted a GEM S2 Turbo. Man that was one almighty sound module.

Wonder how does all this effect Ketron now that GEM made some major parts for them.

Regards.
Sharp.

I always viewed the keyboards as very weak when compared to the big names. At the end of the day, they made the best decision since hardly anyone uses thier products or know they exist.

Lorenzo,

You mentioned they are Italian, are you sure?. I thought they were American.

General Music was always ahead of all the BIG companies, example, the WK8 had everything that most arrangers have today and they did it with only 16 megs of WAVE ROM for the sounds, it had a Hard Drive, 3d sound,200,000 notes sequencer, more midi outs, able to load Akai samples and apply samples to styles ,64 voice polyphony, harmonizer, 4 effects and more at the time that KORG had the I-3 which had no comparison at all. The bad thing is that the marketing was terrible.
I am very very sad to see a company like this go!
maybe Ketron is next???? if Audya doesn't succeed who knows????
Crying or Very sad

Regarding GEM.

Ive heard alot about them being too expensive and unprofessional. In all honesty i have never ever seen a GEM used on stage or in a studio.

In all my years I have been a rebel I do not believe in products that subliminal messages force us to buy. Everything is done with marketing and just because everyone has KORG,ROLAND and and the other big ones doesn't mean that that product is for you.I had all the brands in my lifetime but God has given me a mind to distinguish between what is good and what isn't and what is right for me. The reason that one of the best keyboard companies closed is not because nobody uses them or they have a bad product there are other factors which are many a few is the marketing and another is the support.
The same holds true for the Atari or Amiga computers they were ahead of their time but went out of business, but, at that time (keyword) they were the best in product but, not mainstream so, out of business.
Along with being creative and being able to think on our own with our music I guess it's too late to distinguish between a good product and rehash of the same technology. I keep seeing the same thing over and over every year from the same big manufacturers, how many models of pianos can you make? every year the same!
I am talking in general and giving some food for thought!
