I just thought I'd ask......are there many like me out there that still enjoy creating their own patches?

I gotta admit that I tend to rely heavily on prebuilt patches, and rarely ever create my own. I've done a few - my piece Cxielo was predominantly one patch that I built myself. But most of the time... I just sift through my library of thousands of patches for stuff rather than building my own.

Shameful, yes, but there it is.

"I delete the factory patches and start from scratch." For me, but many times I start from a preset and change parameters untill I reach what I need. And I have to admit that many other times I do not reach the result I have in my mind but another sound that I find usefull.

I make a lot of my own sounds from scratch, but I will also use quite happily presets tweaked or untweaked. I enjoy creating sounds, so that helps ;-) But also I often find that I can create the sound I want more quickly than browsing through the many presets that are on offer. Sometimes creating a sound is an inspiration for a piece.

I am not "religious" about this though. I definitely see no shame in using presets almost exclusively or using premade drum loops or third party multi-samples or any other prefabricated material. We all use some kind of prefab material one way or another.

Im def in the 'start from scratch' category.

Sometimes i will keep some of the factory presets around just to copy ideas from or to tweak the hell out of before i call them my own.

Hell, some of my synths dont even allow you to SAVE presets

Yeah, I spent thirteen years with just a Juno-6. You want to play a patch on that? You MAKE it. And the next time you want to play that patch? You make it again!

I was pretty darn good at making patches with that machine. Had to be. :-)

Its “other” for me because use everything on my Triton Studio. Factory sounds, tweaked factory sounds, and my own sound created from scratch.

A lot of my own sounds are even heavily based around my own sample data.

My case is similar to Sharp's. I'm a 3rd party programmer for various synths, so I voted for "Other".

I wouldn't go so far as to wipe out all the Factory Presets. Many of the patches, performances, programs, combis etc. are excellent. Remember the D50's Fantasia. Regardless of whether you liked it or not, that made a few bucks for the jingle writers who used it. There are other examples for sure. But, to each his own.

I feel at the very beginning...
I think I've never created a sound from a basic multisample, but sometimes I've tweaked presets.
I have the great luck to have a Triton Studio and I think I've never listened to all presets on the board!
Of course, I know I'm wrong, but I'm not a a great programmer at all just because I've never spent a few time trying to reach what I have in my mind.
...that's why I would love to try yamaha: not a lot of presets, but in that small amount are contained very good sounds.

I really enjoy synth programming. With the Triton, I have built several programs from scratch, but most of them were heavily tweaked into something completely different. My Kurzweil is still a bit overwhelming--it would benefit from a touch screen.

Often times when I'm playing live, I'll modify the effects, filters or envelopes to add some variety.

The reason for this poll is.....I recently was chatting with an owner of a Triton Studio (guess he's had it for several years now) who said he's never programmed anything! I was amazed. Maybe he's looked at the manual and played with the effects but that's it.

I wonder how many people out there fall into that category?

As I saied, I guess I'm in hell

I do lots of work with soft synth, and enjoy to program new sounds from soft synths, but from my triton studio...well, I use it at the 0,1%!

Hi
I use all: factory sounds, my own sounds, or modify the sounds that I have.
I have a pa80, and it isn't a powerful workstation but, starting from factory sounds you can create something Intresting.
I like program sounds but my instrument donn't give me the perfect control ( also in realtime ) over my creations, but someone who have the possibility to do this, I refer to who have triton, kurzweill or simil, I want to ask,Why don't you program your sounds? It's a shame...

I use the factory sounds, change some effects or just make a comby of other factorypresets with my triton. But I like to experiment with my own sounds, making some vintage-like synths or special-effects, sampling waves and stuff, to use live. I try to get the best out of my extreme using live and for some simple recording purposes, but that means you have to be able to spend a lot of time with your machine :).
